Can a non-resident be their own registered agent?
Short answer
In practice no. The role needs a physical street address in the state of formation and someone there during business hours on every business day. Most founders outside the US have neither, so they use a commercial registered agent. A mailbox does not satisfy the requirement.
What the role actually is
An address the state and the courts can reach. It exists so legal documents have somewhere to land, which is why a PO box and a forwarding service do not count.
Where the agent sits
In the state where the LLC is formed, such as Wyoming. It has nothing to do with where you bank or where you live.
